Physical activity belongs to essential factors of a healthy life style and is particularly important for health promotion. The purpose of the study was the assessment of adults' physical activity whose pro-health awareness is above average. Material and methods. The researches were carried out on 139 extramural students, 94 first year students of postgraduate studies at the Academy of Physical Education and Sport in Gdansk (66 women, 28 men) teachers and 45 nurses, the students at the Medical University in Gdansk, Faculty of Nursing. The subjects were between 30-50 years old. The researches were conducted in 2004. Anonymous questionnaires including the data relating to physical activity were applied. Results. The frequency analysis of sport/recreational exercises performed weekly showed that the majority of the nurses (71,1%) and women teachers (42,4%) do not exercise regularly, whereas the men usually exercise 2-3 times (34,5%) or 4-5 times (24,1%) weekly. Moreover, 12% of the women teachers and 13,8% the men practice every day. Most of the respondents spend 1 hour daily performing sport/recreation activities. It is disturbing that 31% of the nurses and 19,7% of the women teachers do not spend any time for physical activity. Nurses and women teachers from various forms of physical activity prefer going for walks. Additionally the former more often choose cycling (77,8%) and swimming (35,6%) and the latter aerobic (53%) and cycling (50%), whereas men teachers team games (62,1%), swimming (55,2%), gymnastics (55,2%) and running (48,3%). The respondents assess their physical fitness as good (teachers) and quite good (nurses). Conclusions. Sport/recreational physical activity in nurses compared to teachers is low. The majority of the respondents mainly women do not introduce their knowledge about physical activity into their life style. Thus there is need to take up actions leading to the improvement of physical activity of the respondents representatives of professions which play a special role in propagating pro-health education among other people. |
